This week, instead of a brewery closing, I have news of a merger. As you might have read, Half Acre Beer Co. and Maplewood Brewery & Distillery have announced that they are combining operations.
The merger was announced by Half Acre Owner Gabriel Magliaro and Maplewood Co-Owner Adam Cieslak. The plan is for Half Acre’s president and chief operating officer, Kevin McGillen, to become the new chief executive officer of the combined company, according to Block Club Chicago.
Both brewers would continue to operate as independent brands. Maplewood, which has its own tap room but contracts its beer making to other brewers, would moved its beer production to Half Acre’s plant. The combined brewery would be able to realize economies in ordering grain and other brewing supplies, and seek better prices for cans and for distribution deals.
I’m continuing to build my weekend events, and get my St. Patrick’s Day calendar into shape. I’m out for a wedding this weekend, so I’ll try to work my way around it.
