Being as I’m originally from Iowa — and kind of glad I don’t have to live there now — I was kind of a booster for Peace Tree Brewing of Knoxville. They started in 2009, one of the first of many new craft brewers in the state, and Iowa’s first woman-owned brewery. I even tried to get them to do a special event here in the Chicago area. They had expanded in 2017 to a taproom in Des Moines, and built a production brewery to enable wider distribution. But in 2023, owner Megan McKay announced her intention to sell the operation within two years. But a buyer could not be found and they ceased operations in 2024.
Now their brands and recipes have been picked up by Backpocket Brewing of Coralville, near Iowa City. The first beer to return to can was Blonde Fatale, which had won a gold medal at the 2014 World Beer Cup.
