We’ve lately seen a trend of Chicago area brewers expanding into spaces vacated by defunct local brewers and bars. In Elmhurst 93 Octane took on the old Elmhurst Brewing space. Phase Three’s Elmhurst spot was a former bicycle shop, but now they’re planning another outlet in the former Metropolitan Brewing. Two Hound Red in Glen Ellyn is now a Maplewood taphouse. The Luncky Monk has expanded from South Barring to the former Bricks in Downers Grove. And Old Irving set up a production facility in the former Finch Brewing space.
Now, another brewery expansion is taking place, this time involving an out-of-state brewer, though not at an existing beermaker. Big Grove Brewing, has presented its plans to take over Durty Nellie’s in Palatine. Big Grove started in Solon, Iowa in 2013, and had expanded to six locations in across Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas. Their CEO Matthew Swift and COO Mike Wehr presented plan to the Palatine Planning and Zoning Commission on August 25.
Durty Nellie’s opened as a pub in 1972, and later expanded to become has been a popular music venue in 2003. Co-owner Jim Dolezal has said the space was too small for popular bands, and too big for local acts.
Big Grove’s redevlopment project would remove the stage to make room for brewing equipment. More plans include an expanded kitchen, and a 9,000 sq. ft. patio.
