I’ve managed to keep up with major events during my week away at Niagara Falls. Yes, I visited a beer place, and I’m hoping to write that up once I’m done here.
Phase Three in Chicago
Phase Three Brewing Company is announcing another expansion. They posted on Wednesday that within the next few months, they intend to open a third taproom in Chicago, at the former home of Metropolitan Brewing. For the riverfront location, they promise:
“Every beer we make. Our full seltzer lineup. Hard seltzer cocktails. And eventually, pizza. A hybrid that takes the best of what we love about charred rustic New Haven and modern Brooklyn slice shop pizza.”
After opening seven years ago in Lake Zurich, P3 expanded to an Elmhurst location in 2023, and now to 3057 N. Rockwell St. in Chicago.
Hackney’s/Macushla
Hackney’s has announced that after 85 years, they are closing their restaurant on Lake Ave. in Glenview, leaving a single location nearby on Harms Rd.
The closing Hackney’s was located next door to Macushla Brewing, which had been started by Mike Welch, whose grandfather took over the original Hackney’s roadhouse. Mike had passed away just shy of the brewery’s first anniversary, with his wife Megan keeping it going.
Saturday, Macushla announced that “We’re grateful for Hackney’s legacy and want to reassure everyone that Macushla is NOT closing. We look forward to continue serving the community!”
The Lucky Monk
Earlier this year, we reported that The Lucky Monk gastropub in Barrington was expanding to a second site in Downers Grove. Well, they had their first day of service on Sunday, August 2, and opened for regular hours the following Tuesday.
The new location is the former Bricktown Tavern & Tap at 1461 Butterfield Rd.

They are now reporting they will finally reopen August 12, at 230 S. Wabash Ave.
