Chicago Area Beer Weekend, June 21-23

We are going one step forward and one back still, in the beer economy. First, the good news:

Chicago’s Lake Effect Brewing, currently a production brewery with a small bottle shop, is seeking investors to build out a taproom at 3076 N. Milwaukee Ave. They are offering a tour of the work-in-progress this weekend. Investments are being solicited at this Honeycomb Credit page.

Whiskey Hill Brewing of Westmont has opened its satellite brewery & kitchen in their town’s center, at 5 W. Quincy St. The location is a new retail-residential block just across from Westmont’s Metra station. This returns to a count of four adjoining breweries along the BNSF line: Whiskey Hill, Goldfinger, Emmett’s and Alter, followed by a longer haul to Two Brothers Roundhouse at the end of the line.

But there are some closures: Windmill Brewing in Dyer, IN announced that their last day of tap room service will be June 29. They have cited a monthslong road project in their area that would have made their place all but inaccessible.

Light the Lamp, the hockey-themed beer spot in Grayslake, announced that their last day of business will be June 30. The business had undergone a change in ownership and location, and the stopped brewing its own beer last year.

And out west, the one-time buzz brand Ballast Point has seen its main brewing operation in San Diego taken over by non-alcoholic beverage maker Athletic Brewing. The deal includes Ballast Point’s 300-barrel and 150-barrel brewhouses, cellar, packaging line, QA lab and business offices. The deal closed May 31 but was announced this week, according to San Diego Beer News. Ballast Point has drawn plenty of attention when it was purchased for $1 Billion by Constellation Brands in 2015. Then four years later, it was sold to suburban Chicago brewer Kings & Convicts for an undisclosed, but definitely lower price. Ballast Point beers will continue to be made at various contract facilities.
