One of my big writing jobs is complete. A paper I presented to the Comics and Comic Art Panel of the Popular Culture Association‘s annual conference, held in Chicago last weekend. When it was last in Chicago in 2014, I hosted the first session on beer culture. So I visited some of those sessions, and in the evening we went on a walking tour of the sites of the Chicago Lager Riot of 1855. About the only thing still around from that time was the Chicago River, but I got to help our nationwide visitors experience that city phenomenon called “Chicagohenge.” It was a few days past the vernal equinox, but the setting sun still surprised us down Randolph. And the tour ended at Monk’s Pub, so all was well.
