Got more beers in the cellar to write about. So here’s another one that’s been sent to me by Lagunitas Brewing Co. for my comment.
Passion Grass is the latest in their “One-Hitter” series of limited releases, a joint venture between Lagunitas and Short’s Brewing of Bellaire, MI. It’s described as “A West by Midwest ale brewed with Lemongrass and passion fruit.” It offers a sessionable 4.6% abv, and a relatively mild 54.2 IBU from hops.
The initial pour is nice and spritz, with a thick, quickly dwindling sudsy head. There is plenty of tropical passionfruit In the nose. I suppose I could claim to catch the lemony note of lemongrass, but I wouldn’t be sure.
The taste is an interesting, yet balanced, blend of flavors. The passion fruit gives it a tart note, but then there’s some malt sweetness right alongside. They do not list the hops involved in this brew, but I am thinking there’s some exotic new varietals amplifying the tropical fruit profile.
This goes down pretty easily, not just as a pale ale, but as a relative of a Berliner Weiss. It’s light enough to be a main course beer.
