As always, I have a lot of beer to write about, so let me grab one from out Michigan way.
Sauguatuck Brewing Co.’s Blueberry Maple Stout is one of their popular year-round beers: a sweet stout with, of course, blueberry and maple. Is it worth taking a break from IPAs and shandys in the middle of summer?
Unlike a lot of blueberry beers I’ve had, this is big on the fruit right under the cap. Like the blueberry syrup at your local IHOP. It pours black, with a swiftly fading head of dark foam, which also shows a tinge of purple.
The taste keeps up the blueberry syrup taste, enough to overpower the side of maple syrup. There’s still a bit of malt roastiness to it, matched up to some very sticky, syrupy sweetness. At 6.0% abv, it’s not a sessionable stout. More like a nice dessert beer. Maybe even worth floating some ice cream in for a beer float.
