It’s Sunday, November 6 as I write this, and it’s in the upper 60’s outside. It’s also nearly 4 pm on the first day back to Standard Time, and the sun is nearly setting. Time to break out another beer that has been sent to me by the brewer and take picture while I still have some light.
Two Brothers Heavy Handed IPA is a “wet hop” India Pale Ale, meaning hops are shipped from the hop yards without drying them down, and added “wet,” or “green.” That also means it’s best enjoyed fresh. I’m trying to do that with my fresh IPA’s, while I’m also trying to clear our my summer lagers and Pilseners. Some days, it just ain’t easy being me.
The beer pours a deep amber to brown, darker than the usual IPA, under a sudsy head. I get piney notes of Cascade hops in the nose, without much bitterness, followed by a hint of resin.
Wet hop beers are usually described as “sticky,” and this one fits the mold. Sticky like diluted tree sap, in fact. But there’s also a caramel toasted malt note that’s close to an English brown ale, with extra carbonation. But the hops stay in the forefront. Not quite “green” as with some fresh-hopped ales, but definitely strong enough to let you appreciate the effort that does into this trendy offshoot.
Previously, the Bros. have released Heavy Handed with single-hop version, either Chinook, Cascade, or Centennial. As I wrote this up, I found that for 2016, they went strictly with Cascade hops which I can suppose was my impression as well. This also should be noted for leaving s hoppy and lactic aftertaste, and a bit of alcohol-induced giddiness.
Recommendations are to pair this with spicy food. I might add sharp cheeses like a cheddar, or as a palate cleanser between dinner and dessert.
